The side brushes of the sweeping machines are the brushes that are mounted on the front of the sweepers, which are responsible for directing the debris towards the center of the sweeper.
The side brushes of urban cleaning are the most visible and evident brushes of the sweeping machines, and they are placed at the front of the machine mounted on hydraulic arms that allow the operator to position them, whose mission is to expand the working width of the sweeper, directing the debris towards the suction and collection system of the sweeper.
Additionally, the side brushes are responsible for working against the curbs, removing the debris that tends to accumulate on them.
There are sweeping machines that collect the debris only through the central suction system, with these side brushes being the only ones the sweeper has.
There are sweeper models that include a third side brush on an additional and extendable hydraulic arm, which aims to expand the working width of the machine or sweep surfaces at different levels, such as when the sweeper is sweeping a street, aligned with the curb and carries the third brush on top of the sidewalk.

Side brushes are defined by 3 aspects:
The vast majority of side brushes of sweepers use a mixture of 3×2 mm polypropylene plastic filaments (some PET variants as well) mixed with 3.3×0.6 mm flat steel rod as sweeping material.
The brush can be defined to be less aggressive by eliminating the steel, resulting in brushes made only of plastic, which generally do not leave marks on steels and pavements, are more economical but have a shorter lifespan than the previous ones.
Also, more aggressive and stronger brushes than the mixed ones are made, using only the 3.3×0.6 mm steel rod, which are mainly used in very aggressive environments with a large amount of debris such as ports, industrial areas, or roads. Occasionally, the side brushes made only of steel are used as a light brush cutter.
A still quite unknown variant is the silent brush. It is a brush whose sweeping material is 1×7 or 1×19 2 mm steel cables coated either with PA6 or rubber, and they are the most expensive brushes with less cleaning capacity than the classic ones, but also the ones with the longest lifespan.
The reason is that the cable is 4 mm thick and in the end, the arc of the inserters introduces at most 2 cables into the inserter compared to 8 or 10 plastic filaments, resulting in a less dense side brush in terms of sweeping units than the previous ones.
There is a final variant that can be considered a side brush, which is the weed brushed, integrating large blocks of steel cables coated with plastic, resulting in very hard brushes that have a very strong removal capacity and are designed to clear weeds from curbs and small bushes.
They are very strong equipment, sometimes with welded steel rods added to give them more sweeping capacity and not just function as brush cutters.
The most important is the outer diameter of the disc, as this defines its size, but it is also necessary to consider the measurement of the inner diameter of the side because there are machines that introduce elements in their center and could not be mounted.
Most use filament output of about 280 mm and the same opening angles.
Each sweeper has defined its own anchors, so it is necessary to take them into account when manufacturing the side brush.
The brush has some defined holes in which the fixing screws to the sweeper are installed.
